pop & jazz reimagined with tight grooves, bold solos, and soul-shaking fun.
Half Step Revolution is a fearless fusion of groove, improvisation, and high-energy creativity, born from Montgomery, Alabama’s improvisation-driven jazz scene. Keyboardist and saxophonist Tim Stuart, bassist Joe Lauziere, guitarist Matt Clements, and drummer Isaac Hayes form an instrumental ensemble that moves fluidly between deep-pocket funk, daring jazz harmony, and soulful improvisation, crafting performances that engage your mind and move your feet. Drawing on the exploratory spirit of Soulive, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Roy Hargrove, as well as the infectious melodies of pop and soul classics, Half Step Revolution delivers music that is intelligent, electrifying, and impossible to sit still through. It’s not just jazz — it’s a movement: a half step from tradition and a giant leap into the groove.

Half Step Revolution emerged from Montgomery, Alabama’s improvisation-driven jazz scene, where late-night jam sessions are the city’s heartbeat. In 2024, saxophonist and pianist Tim Stuart moved from Destin, Florida to Montgomery seeking a fresh musical direction. Although quickly becoming a first-call player in the local scene, Tim grew frustrated with the sameness of every session — the same standards played the same way, over and over. He wanted to create something different: a band that fused the improvisational freedom of jazz with the accessible, groove-driven sounds of the city’s R&B and club band scene.
In the summer of 2025, Tim began performing as a member of the Montgomery Jazz Alliance with bassist Joe Lauziere during Thursday Night Jazz Jams at Prevail Union MGM. Nights spent trading ideas over deep grooves and bold improvisation quickly transformed casual sessions into a creative partnership built on trust, curiosity, and a shared drive to explore new musical territory. Guitarist Matt Clements joined after an incredible performance with Joe & Tim backing up legendary saxophonist Sam Williams during a late night session at Montgomery's iconic Red Bluff Bar. The trio's chemistry was immediate: Joe’s adventurous harmonic instincts, Matt’s virtuosic guitar playing, and Tim’s inventive on-the-fly keyboard arranging & fiery saxophone work blended into something greater than the sum of its parts.
Drummer Isaac Hayes joined the group after guesting with Tim and Joe during a Montgomery Jazz Alliance residency at The Lyric at Esther's in Prattville, AL, where his deep-pocket groove and precise timing anchored the improvisations and let the music breathe, stretch, and surprise. With this lineup, Half Step Revolution was fully realized: a band capable of delivering music that is both intellectually stimulating and viscerally fun, bridging the exploratory spirit of jazz with the immediacy and excitement of R&B and groove-driven popular music.
From the very first rehearsal, it was clear that Half Step Revolution wasn’t interested in fitting neatly into any one category. The band draws on the fiery fusion of Freddie Hubbard, Chick Corea, and Marcus Miller, the exploratory spirit of Soulive, Medeski Martin & Wood, Robert Glasper, and Roy Hargrove, and the infectious melodies of pop and soul artists like The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and The Police. The result is music that is at once challenging, adventurous, and undeniably fun — grooving one moment, soaring in improvisational flight the next.
On stage, Half Step Revolution moves fluidly between high-energy fusion, funk grooves, and steamy smooth jazz, creating performances that are as dynamic as they are unpredictable. Extended solos, inventive arrangements, and fearless improvisation keep audiences on their toes — and on their feet. With Isaac’s rhythmic drive, Tim’s inventive arrangments & horn and keyboard work, Matt’s expressive guitar voice, and Joe’s harmonic daring, every show is a journey through sound and energy, challenging expectations while keeping everyone fully engaged.
Half Step Revolution is more than a band — it’s a live experience. A half step away from tradition and a leap into the groove, the group delivers music that lingers long after the last note fades.
